STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Chinese artist Liu Bolin's art exhibit, "The Sociology of the Invisible Body", has held a public reception in Los Angeles.
LIFESTYLES has more.
Ten of Liu's best photographs and sculptures are on display at California State University Northridge Art Galleries.
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) WANG MEIQIN, Northridge Associate Professor:
"He is a very interesting artist, creative and also I like his art because his art actually responses immediately to what is going on in China. So he actually engages with the contemporary Chinese reality."
Art gallery director Jim Sweeter said the exhibit has broadened the students' horizon.
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) JIM SWEETERS, Northridge Art Gallery Director:
"We love that our students can come and see this work. And hopefully they will do research on different artists and learn more. Cause it is a small world now, right. The Chinese artists are doing wonderful works themselves and so it is very important for us to see this type of work."
Through photographs and sculpture, the exhibit explores the interaction of art and society in contemporary China, as well as the complex relationship between individuals and the living environment.
Many of the visitors said they have found Liu's works very powerful.
SOUNDBITE (CHINESE) LU XIAOYUN, Science and Technology PhD:
"I think that most Americans have never been to China, or maybe have just toured around. They cannot understand its culture. As I said before, I think this kind of exhibition opens a window for them. It is a way of showing China to Americans and letting them learn about China from a different perspective."
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) ANGE KASZA, Visitor:
"This is very advanced. For contemporary art, I think it is very advanced. I think it represents a new insight."
The exhibit opened last Saturday and lasts till Sept. 15.
