STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Fashion is never an exclusive right for human. In New York on Friday, a fashion show was thrown out to make that point clear.
Instead of inviting beautiful human models, the show is a stage full of lovely puppies.
LIFESTYLES was there to watch the dogs on the catwalk!
The Dog Fashion Show on Friday is a yearly highlight preceding the Westminster Kennel Dog Show, where the best and prettiest dogs of each breed are selected.
This year's event was especially glitzy ---- the organizer picked the theme of Venetian Masquerade, which cost dog owners weeks and hundreds of dollars to make costumes for their four-legged friends and themselves.
SOUNDBITE: JENNA ODDO, PARTICIPANT
"Because it was Venetian Masquerade, I was going with Phantom of the Opera and this is a dress that was similar to the one that Christine wore from the ball scene and Kicki Cannon made my girl’s little outfit which is all encrusted with Swarovski crystals. So we just decided that we kind of make it a little bit more than just the average and we’re all the way from Mississippi. She’s a little tired but she’s still holding up good."
The show also included a doggie wedding ceremony, an opportunity for male dogs to ask for a paw in marriage!
Some visitors had come all the way from Europe to attend the over-the-top festivities.
SOUNDBITE: LAURENCE BIGAOUI, PARTICIPANT FROM PARIS
"She is Pamela Rose. Rose in French means pink, because I love pink. So it's Pamela Rose. And she is one and a half years old. We are from France. She is a real Parisian girl."
The outfits presented were created by several U.S. animal fashions designers. According to a U.S. market research, Americans spend about 40 billion U.S. dollars on their pets every year.
